Fair and Balanced

May 11, 2004

In an excerpt from a new book by David Brock, former right-wing pundit, it’s postulated that the pervasive bias in the media has changed the face of modern democracy.

“The right-wing drive for media power must also be understood as an overturning of the First Amendment, which posits that good information will drive out bad information given diversity in the marketplace of ideas. ”

This lack of diversity in the mainstream media has done more than just inhibit the free speech of those of us to the left of Jerry Fallwell. I think it has irreparably harmed our country, at least for the near future.

The complete lack of respect the right wing has for truth and the sanctity of journalism has created a nation of people fed by individuals willing to pander to their most base impulses. Fox, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, and Coulter are successful because they appeal to the ugly, materialistic nature of our species. As long as they continue to perpetuate the myth that they and those who think like them are the only ones looking out for the voting public’s best interests, we’re never going to see a change in the power structure of the US.

The base problem is that “liberals” are now universally known in the US as a bunch of money-spending, lying, philandering cock-jockeys.

What we need is a media system that can fight back mano e mano with the neocons. And right now all we have is Air America and Gore’s soon to be launched cable network.
